Mexico vs. Uruguay - Football Match Report - September 7, 2018 - ESPN

Luis Suarez scored twice and added an assist as Uruguay beat Mexico 4-1 in Houston on Friday.

Both teams started lineups that featured several veterans from their campaigns at the World Cup that saw Mexico reach the round of 16 and Uruguay bow to eventual champions France in the quarterfinals.

Mexico dominated early play in front of an El Tri-friendly crowd before Jose Maria Gimenez headed in Uruguay’s first goal off a corner kick in the 22nd minute.

Mexico quickly responded three minutes later after Hirving Lozano was brought down inside the penalty box, with Raul Jimenez converting to briefly tie up the game.

Then the Suarez show commenced at NRG Stadium. The Barcelona striker scored in the 32nd minute off a precise free kick into the bottom right corner that bounced past Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

After drawing a penalty in the 41st minute, Suarez sublimely chipped in a Paneka shot for his second on the night to give El Celeste a two-goal lead into the half.

Suarez was also involved in the Uruguay’s fourth score, setting up Gaston Pererio’s header in the 58th minute.

Cruz Azul breakout star Roberto Alvarado, making his national team debut, drew a penalty in 73rd minute but Jimenez failed to convert for what would have been his second on the night.

Mexico will travel to Nashville to take on the United States on Sept. 11. Uruguay will break camp for the rest of the international period.
